Hey kids, fun with propane - 06/27/2003

Today was propane adventure day. It seems filling permanent (non-removable) tanks raises safety and legal issues, thus some propane fillers won't fill our RV. U-Haul gladly filled our tank. 29 gallons, $55. Ouch. When I got home, I checked the weight of propane, since tanks are rated by weight and the filling stations use gallons. This makes no sense, but neither does getting 8 hot dogs and 10 buns in a pack.

We have an 80 lb tank. Propane weighs 4.2 lbs per gallon. That means U-Haul put in 123 lbs of propane into our tank.

Wait a minute.

Erin and I went back there and got a 9 gallon refund, which is still too much propane as the tanks only get filled to the 80% mark, but convincing them of the weight of propane was difficult enough. I don't know whether the dude forgot to reset the propane counter from the previous customer, or the poor initial connection to my tank leaked A LOT of propane (he shut it off right away and made a better connection).

Anyway, the stove works now. Boiling water takes quite a while, but hey, the point of this trip is to take it easy.
