The Great Mountain Pass - 10/02/2003
A few hundred miles west of the Great Sand Dunes on highway 160 is Wolf Creek Pass. I think it's something like 12,000 or 13,000 feet. That's not TOO high, I-70 west of Denver crosses higher than that, but traveling in an underpowered RV in need of a diet that hasn't acclimated itself to higher altitude yet makes it feel much, much higher. I had it floored and we were lucky to break 25 mph going up the highway.
But... we made it. We had lunch on the side of the highway at the top of the pass. I think that's one of my favorite things about driving an RV around -- being able to pull over wherever and take a nap, or cook some food, is awesome!
