RV Travel Log

The "Other" West Coast - 08/06/2003

The last two nights were the first two nights that we didn't pay for camping. The first night, Monday, we spent parked on the side of a residential street near my friend Andrew Satter's apartment in Evanston, IL. It seemed like a quiet and safe neighborhood and we had no problems, other than the occasional passing car. The second night we spent sleeping in the Benton Harbor, MI Wal-Mart parking lot along with a couple other RVs. Again, no problems; the word on the street is official company policy at Wal-Marts says its OK for RVs to park and sleep overnight.

Between these two nights, we meandered all around downtown Chicago, beginning with the Art Institute. Good place, of course, and free on Tuesdays! I got to see some lovely pieces by Mondrian, Kandinsky, Monet, and some-other-artist-i-can't-remember-but-wanted-to-remember. We almost went to the Shedd Aquarium, but the $21 entrance fee for everything was excessive, and the limited $8 fee was too limited. Maybe we got spoiled by the free things in Forest Park.. The only other thing worth mentioning is lunch - Ronnie's Steakhouse, somewhere downtown by the Madison train stop, has fantastic pizza.
