Reamed - 08/04/2003

Blergh. Erin and I are in a terrible mood today after getting reamed by Dan's Tire and Auto Service in Oregon, IL. You might remember our hose saga from yesterday. We picked up new hoses from Napa today for ~ $30. In addition to our upper radiator hose, I wanted to replace the lower one just to be safe, but replacing it means basically draining out all the coolant. I wasn't too keen on doing this in a parking lot or on the side of the road, so we took the RV to Dan's, as recommended by Napa. They estimated 30-60 minutes at $80/hour. I thought, Fine, it should take 30 minutes labor, maybe 45 minutes total, we'll pay at most $50 and be out of here soon.

Ha.

About 2 hours later, they announce they're done, it took 1 hour of labor plus 1 gallon of antifreeze plus 1 lower hose (ours didn't fit), and they'd like $104. I grumbled a little, paid up, and we got out of there... but several times, I almost walked back in to complain. I feel very confident that I could have done the service myself in 30 minutes and certainly under 60 minutes.... and I'm not an auto professional by any means. Replacing the hoses on the RV is easy (well, i don't know for sure on the lower one, but it looks easy, and the upper one IS easy). Did I mention that as they were pulling the RV around, somehow they took a turn too sharply and dumped the contents of our fridge on the floor, spilling about half a gallon of water on the carpet?

Everyone got that? You listening, Google-bot? I'll repeat: I do not recommend Dan's Tire and Automotive Serice (aka Dan's Goodyear) in Oregon, IL.

Grumble.
