On the road again... - 08/03/2003
After our single day in Hannibal, we traveled 5 hours north to Mississippi Palisades State Park in northwestern Illinois. We went here because I'd heard of good climbing. We ended up spending 3 nights in the park and not once finding the climbing areas. I really enjoyed the park and the area and the nearby town of Savanna, although I do feel a little bad about not getting to go climbing or even check it out. Bad me.
On the other hand, I finally got some stuff done, like working on our web page a little, getting my TravelLog Python script working, and fixing yet some more broken RV things (turns out our water heater connection basically melted from the pressure and heat).
On the way to the park, I had an incident with a narrow bridge. We scraped along the side for a few seconds then heard a loud "POP" and we were free of the bridge. Turns out there was minor damage except for our bumper, which was fixed with a little elbow grease.
Today we decided to head to Chicago to visit my friend Andrew Satter, but about an hour into our trip, while refueling, our engine started spewing green smoke. Turns out our upper radiator hose had a pinhole in it and every single shop (garage, hardware, car parts) in town was closed. Small towns on Sundays are dead.
We walked over to a closed oil change place where I saw a guy shutting a garage door. He turned out to be the owner and was changing his own oil; he helped us out tremendously by pulling a radiator hose off his old Monte Carlo and helping me to install it in the RV. He even gave us an antifreeze refill. Dave and Lindy, thank you SO much!
Our new radiator hose is a wee bit short and rubs on the belt pulley, so some duct tape and zip ties are holding it up currently. Because of this, we are spending the night in nearby Lowden State Park in Oregon, IL; just up the road is a Napa auto parts store, where first thing in the morning I'll be in the parking lot fixing our radiator hose for good. THEN, on to some fun stuff in Chicago.
