Scooter! - 08/21/2003

God, this place is a country-style Vegas. we cruised over to Gatlinburg today, which is still touristy but in a slightly less gaudy way; the town feels like a Colorado town, with nice-looking buildings and mountain streams running through the town. Parking is really tight, though, so it's a good thing we rented a scooter.

That's right, we found a place that rents them fairly cheaply and went for it. It was a 2-stroke 50CC Derbi but carried the two of us just fine. I think we made it up to 40-45 mph (downhill), and it could pull 30-35 mph just fine. The guy required a competency test before renting, which was a little intimidating considering I had never ridden a scooter before and only a tiny bit of a motorcycle. I got no practice time, just had to hop on, do a tight turn, weave through a narrow sidewalk, go uphill, then steeply downhill, all with my feet never touching the ground. No sweat.

We had a blast on the scooter. I think we went 26 miles and refilled it with 0.25 gallons of gas ($0.45). Argh, the Chairman is a gas pig.
